The "Smith" family lived at Portsoy in the north-east of Scotland during the 1800s to the early part of the 20th Century.

They were shipbuilders and seafarers who travelled the world in what was part of Britain's merchant navy. They sailed vessels at a time when the age of sail was the only means of covering large distances swiftly. Contemporary vessels were "Cutty Sark", and the tea clippers which carried cargos as far as China before the onset of the industrial revolution.

Here is a map showing the location of Portsoy- it lies between Lossiemouth and Banff. The villages of Sandend and Portsoy figure prominently in the lives of the Smiths and their descendants.

This is an early map of Portsoy drawn around 1860, it is very representative of the area at the time of the Smiths and their shipbuilding business.
